Waterloo, named after the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, has about 106,000 residents. Waterloo is a major centre for manufacturing, the insurance industry, and is part of Canada's "technology triangle". The community has 1,100 acres of parks and trails, as well as internationally recognized recreational, arts and cultural facilities. The city is served by three major hospitals, though located in adjoining Kitchener.
Waterloo lies west of the Grand River and just north of the 401, with good highway connections along #7 and #8, as well as a major airport east of the community, and is served by VIA Rail and inter-city bus operators. Waterloo has a hospital and a local police force.
The community is served by 25 elementary schools, 4 high schools, and 2 public libraries. Post-secondary education is available at the University of Waterloo, Wilfred Laurier University, and nearby University of Guelph, and Conestoga College, which has a Kitchener campus.
Waterloo is well served by 3 significant shopping malls and plazas, and has a number of vibrant retail areas including Uptown Waterloo, and the St Jacobs Farmers Market just to the north.
Waterloo has 3 performance theatres, 1 cinema screens, a museum, and two public galleries, For athletes, there are 60 baseball diamonds, 20 public tennis courts, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor swimming pools, 3 public and 1 private golf courses. Waterloo has Laurel Creek Conservation Area and Reservoir to the west, though Centennial/Waterloo Park is the city's recreational and festival centre. There is the Chicopee Ski Hill nearby on the city's SE corner
